Overview

Description

TEMPTMA was modeled based on the production process described by "Worldwide Pat., 2016". First, TAA is reacted with dimethylamine under palladium-C catalyst at -10°C. Hydrogen is then added to the reaction mixture at 60°C. Afterwards, the catalyst is filtered and reused in the same process. The solvent was recirculated as well. In this step, Intermediate 1 is produced. The energy required in this step only includes energy needed to reach the reaction temperature 𝐸𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛.

Intermediate 1 obtained in the previous step is dissolved in a 1:1 mixture of acetonitrile and toluene and transferred to a pressure reactor. After that, the reaction mixture is heated to 70°C, and chloromethane is added. Then, the precipitation is collected by reducing the temperature to 20°C. The precipitation is
then washed with toluene, to obtain Intermediate 2. The energy required in this step only includes energy needed to reach the reaction temperature 𝐸𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛.

Subsequently, Intermediate 2, sodium hydroxide, and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) are dissolved in water. The mixture is then heated to 90°C, and 30wt% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is added dropwise. Afterwards, it takes a few days for the chemical mixture to react. Here, an approximate reaction time (24 h) is applied in the calculations. When the reaction is finished, the resulting precipitate (exhausted MgSO4) is removed by filtration, and the pH of the solution is adjusted to 5. The solution is then stirred at 90°C to remove hydrogen peroxide. The desired product TEMPTMA is obtained after removing water and drying at 40°C. The process was scaled up in LCA model, meaning that solvent usage was reduced by 20%, and solvent recirculation was considered, following the approach described above in the production of TEMPO-4-sulfate potassium.
